Psalms 45:1 - My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.

Keep Building: Lessons from Nehemiah

The Book of Nehemiah recounts the story of Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, who hears about the desolate state of Jerusalem and feels compelled to act. He seeks permission from the king to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the city’s walls, which were in ruins.

  1. Nehemiah’s Mission: After receiving the king’s approval and resources, Nehemiah travels to Jerusalem. He surveys the damaged walls and organizes the people to begin the rebuilding process.
  2. Challenges Faced: Nehemiah encounters opposition from local leaders, such as Sanballat and Tobiah, who attempt to intimidate and undermine the rebuilding efforts. Despite these challenges, Nehemiah encourages the people to remain steadfast.
  3. Community Involvement: Nehemiah mobilizes the community, assigning families specific sections of the wall to rebuild. This collective effort fosters unity and determination among the people.
  4. Spiritual Renewal: Alongside the physical rebuilding, Nehemiah emphasizes the importance of returning to God’s Law, leading the people in repentance and renewal of their covenant with God.
  5. Completion of the Wall: Despite the obstacles, the wall is completed in just 52 days, demonstrating God’s hand in their efforts. Nehemiah’s leadership and faith are central to this success.

Reflection

The Lord brought to my mind Nehemiah in the Bible, who was instructed to keep building and moving forward. This highlights the themes of perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges. Just as Nehemiah remained committed to his mission despite opposition, we are encouraged to continue our own journey of building and progressing in our endeavors, trusting in God’s guidance and strength.
